Newborn Photography: Tips for Stunning Family Portraits

Bringing a new baby into the world is an unforgettable experience, and those first few weeks fly by in a blur. That’s why I love capturing the sweetness of a newborn’s early days—those tiny fingers, sleepy smiles, and the deep connection between parents and their little one. If you’re considering a newborn session, here’s everything you need to know to feel prepared and relaxed for the experience.

1. When is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Session?

The best time for a newborn session is within the first two weeks of life, ideally between 5-14 days old. During this window, babies are still in that dreamy, sleepy stage and naturally curl up into those beautiful womb-like poses. Of course, older newborns can still have a wonderful session, but they may be more alert and awake.

2. What to Expect During the Session

Newborn sessions are slow-paced and relaxed, typically lasting 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the package you choose. This allows time for soothing, feeding, and cuddles to keep baby comfortable. My goal is to create a calm and peaceful environment so you can sit back and enjoy the experience.

I offer a variety of props, wraps, and outfits so that everything is taken care of for you. If you have sentimental items you’d like to incorporate (like a special blanket or heirloom), I’d love to include them in the photos.

3. What Should Parents Wear?

Since the focus of the session is your baby, I always recommend soft, neutral tones like white, cream, or light browns for parents and siblings. These colors create a timeless and airy look while keeping the attention on your little one.

For moms, I have a selection of postpartum-friendly dresses available, or you can wear something comfortable and simple. Since most images focus on the upper body, there’s no need to stress about pants! The goal is to create intimate, beautiful images that highlight the love between you and your baby.

4. Can Siblings & Parents Be Included?

Absolutely! If you’d like family or sibling shots, I’ll guide you through gentle posing to create natural and heartfelt images. I always make sure older siblings feel included and excited—sometimes even letting them “help” so they feel like a big part of the process.

5. When Will I Receive My Photos?

I know how eager parents are to see their little one’s photos! Your final, edited images will be delivered via an online gallery within one week of your session. You’ll also have the option to purchase additional images if you fall in love with more than what’s included in your package (which happens often!).

Final Thoughts:
Newborn photography is all about capturing the fleeting beauty of these early days before they change in the blink of an eye. My goal is to provide a stress-free, cozy experience where you can soak up these precious moments while I take care of the rest. If you’re expecting and want to reserve a spot, I’d love to chat and plan something perfect for your growing family. 💛
